The Wiener Philharmoniker Week in Japan is one of the highlights of the musical calendar not just for Suntory Hall but for all Japan. In 2024, Andris Nelsons will lead the orchestra with renowned soloists Yefim Bronfman (Piano) and MIDORI (Violin).

Chamber Music Garden 2024

Jun 1-16

June marks the chance to relish the diverse musical genius that only Suntory Hall’s Chamber Music Garden (CMG) can offer. We will be welcoming the Verus String Quartet to be the second Japanese group to perform the complete Beethoven string quartet cycle. A total of five hugely talented string quartets from across the world, including Quatuor Voce, Quatuor Danel, and the Jerusalem Quartet, will also be gathering at the Garden. An international ensemble of musicians, produced by Yu Kosuge will be playing Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth. Also enjoy performances from the Aoi Trio, a collaboration between Atsushi Sakai and Yoshio Watanabe, and more from a fantastic line up of ensembles.

Summer Festival 2024

A midsummer staple, Suntory Hall presents three series of cutting-edge contemporary music festivals.
- Producer Series Irving Arditti
This series invites a different artist each year to curate a concert from a unique perspective. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Arditti Quartet, four performances will be staged around them, with leader Irvin Arditti as producer.
- Theme composer Philippe Manoury
This year, we invites the leading French composer Manoury. Three including the world premiere of a new orchestral work, and a composition workshop will be held.
- The 34th Competition of Yasushi Akutagawa Suntory Award for Music Composition
This award is presented to the most notable orchestral work by a Japanese composer premiered in the previous year. After performances of the three nominated works, the jury will deliberate on an open stage. There will also be premiered a new work by the awardee.

The Subscription Concert for Children has been a popular series among children for years. This year, the concerts feature the change and evolution of music and instruments with the times. The Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and expert soloists come together to perform in this full-scale concert for children.

Chamber Music Academy Concert

A fresh performance by the fellows (academy members) of Suntory Hall Chamber Music Academy who showcase the fruit of their devoted efforts on music. The musicians’ introductions of the pieces provided before each performance allows the audience to feel more familiar with the music. The academy is also proud that the current fellows and recent alumni have won international competitions or found their professional careers as orchestra musicians.

Opera Academy Concert

Opera Academy was inaugurated in 1993. In 2011, the Academy invited tenor Giuseppe Sabbatini, who currently works as a conductor and vocal instructor, to join as the Executive Faculty. In July, young singers and pianists who have been under the tutelage of Giuseppe Sabbatini for one year present their accomplishments on stage. The programme will include Italian songs and opera arias of 17th and 18th centuries.

the 53rd Suntory Music Award

The Suntory Music Award is a prize awarded every year to the individual or group who has made the most remarkable contributions to the development of classical music in Japan. The 53rd award (for 2021) was won by Yoshimichi Hamada. Hamada is recognised worldwide as a virtuoso at the recorder and cornet. Currently, he leads the early music ensemble Anthonello and in recent years has put a focus on baroque opera. The ensemble will be performing Handel’s opera Rinaldo.

ARK Hills Music Week 2024

Suntory Hall ARK Classics opens the ARK Hills Music Week and will be led by artistic leaders Nobuyuki Tsujii and Fumiaki Miura. 11 incredibly diverse concerts will be performed at the Main Hall and Blue Rose (Small Hall) for a period of five days.

Suntory Hall series Concerto “Ishin Denshin”

Michie Koyama, one of Japan’s most famous pianists, will perform the third of her four-year-long concerto series alongside the NHK Symphony Orchestra and her longtime friend and collaborative partner Junichi Hirokami. The programme will include Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27 and Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1, two gems of the piano concerto repertoire.

“MESSIAH” Since 2001

Internationally acclaimed Bach Collegium Japan (BCJ) performs the complete version of Messiah. The project was launched in 2001 and has been held annually ever since. Enjoy this epic work depicting the life of Jesus Christ from his birth, death and resurrection. For its 24th edition this year, principal conductor of the BCJ, Masato Suzuki will be returning to the podium.
