“Huh?” “Wow!” “What the!” Have you ever responded that way when you look at a work of art? This exhibition takes those emotional responses, reactions to unsettling experiences that we cannot put into words, as critical stimuli for looking more closely at a work. “What was it about this work that unsettled me?” Think about that, and you will feel a more intense interest in the work before your eyes.
In this exhibition through display techniques and works that are deliberately disconcerting, we free up eyes, brain, and heart to boost that “I’ve got to look at this piece!” feeling. Famous works, rare works, secret treasures: this exhibition presents objects from the Suntory Museum of Art collection that will stimulate visitors to engage deliberately and actively in the act of looking, to savor the essence of Japanese art.
Listen to how you feel, stirred up by unsettling encounters with these works, and you may make unexpected discoveries that draw you much closer to the fascination of the arts of Japan.
