Water, the wellspring of life, has long been an object of religious devotion. Pure and mysterious, water is used in both Shinto and Buddhist ritual. We all know the tale of the beautiful princess who lived in the dragon king’s palace. This exhibition focuses on deities―dragons, the goddess Benzaiten, the set of three deities known as the Sumiyoshi Sanjin―associated with water from ancient to medieval times, tracing the history of visible forms rooted in those religious beliefs.
