The ceramic artist Ogata Kenzan (1663-1743) was the younger brother of the artist Ogata Korin, founder of what became known as the Rimpa School. Born in a cultivated Kyoto family that owned the Kariganeya, a prosperous store dealing in kimono fabrics, Kenzan was raised in context of great artistic refinement. As a potter, he introduced new designs based on painting and literature to the world of ceramics. The Kenzan style has been sustained in a lineage that includes Kyoto ware potters and such modern ceramic artists as Miura Kenya thanks to Sakai Hoitsu’s work in honoring, reviving, and developing the Rimpa School(in the later years). This exhibition will introduce Kenzan’s legacy, a heritage of beauty sustained over the generations from Kenzan to today.
