Suntory Hall Chamber Music Garden 2025
Schumann Quartett
performs Beethoven’s String Quartet Cycle

Suntory Hall presents “Schumann Quartett – Beethoven Cycle I – VI” as part of its annual early summer festival, Chamber Music Garden (June 7 – 22, 2025). The vibrant Schumann Quartett will perform the complete cycle of Beethoven’s string quartets over six days (June 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18) in the Blue Rose (Small Hall).
The performance of Beethoven’s complete string quartet cycle has been the central feature of Chamber Music Garden since its foundation in 2011. Every year, a different quartet is invited to take on the cycle: past participants include the Henschel Quartet (2012) and the Jerusalem Quartet (2021). This year it is the turn of the Schumann Quartett from Germany, consisting of the Schumann brothers, Erik (violin), Ken (violin), Mark (cello), and violist Veit Hertenstein. The quartet make its first visit to Japan in eight years (the first in the current formation).

Schumann Quartett, formed in 2007 in Cologne, were mentored by Günter Pichler of the Alban Berg Quartet and Eberhard Feltz. Awards include first prizes at the 8th International Competition “Schubert und die Musik der Moderne” in Graz in 2012 and at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition in 2013. It has performed at prestigious chamber music venues such as the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Wigmore Hall in London.

In this cycle, Beethoven’s string quartets (and the arrangement of Piano Sonata Op. 14, No. 1) have been grouped into six programmes by theme. “Each emphasizes a different aspect of his compositional language, from the light and joyful to the shadowed and introspective, from the fugue as a symbol of freedom to the deep, heartfelt expression of his later years,” the quartet explains.

The Schumann Quartett thrives on the excitement of the live stage and draws energy from connecting with the audience. Expect plenty of spontaneity as well as profound emotional depths as they undertake this extraordinary journey through light and shadow in the intimate space of the Blue Rose.
