Suntory Beverage & Food Limited Awarded Position on the CDP Water A List Company for the Second Year in a Row

Suntory Beverage & Food Limited has been acknowledged as a CDP Water A List 2017 company after being highly regarded by the CDP (an international non-profit organization providing environmental information disclosure systems) due to company initiatives including activities serving to reduce water used at its plants and its Water Resource Cultivation initiatives. This designation means that for the second year in a row, Suntory Beverage & Food Limited is one of 73 companies (and one of 12 Japanese companies) found on A List 2017 selected from a pool of approximately 1,600 companies from around the world subject to CDP investigations.
This result was announced during the CDP 2017 Japan Report Session held at United Nations University in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward on Tuesday, October 24th.

CDP is an international NPO which works to measure, disclose, manage and share important environmental information on entities such as companies and cities. Since 2003, the organization has worked on behalf of great number of institutional investors to collect and subsequently analyze information on business risks and opportunities emerging due to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Results are published annually. Starting in 2010, CDP began collecting and analyzing information concerning water-related risks and in 2014 the organization began carrying out investigations targeting 150 Japanese companies. Starting in 2015, the organization began conducting response evaluations. This year, investigations were conducted with the approval of 803 institutional investors from around the world managing a total of 100 trillion US dollars in assets.

Suntory Beverage & Food Limited sees preserving and regenerating nature and reducing environmental impact as its primary responsibilities as a company supported by nature's gifts. With that in mind, we’re conducting all sorts of activities aimed at reducing environmental impact after having set up our Targets toward 2020*1 based on the Group’s Environmental Vision toward 2050 formulated for the purpose of contributing to the creation of a sustainable society.

*1: (1) 42% reduction in water used for the washing and cooling of manufacturing facilities and containers at Suntory plants*2
(2)25% reduction in CO2 emissions*2 within our value chain as a result of the further weight reduction of containers, the utilization of renewable raw ingredients and plant-derived raw ingredients, as well as the introduction of vending machines presenting the lowest amount of power consumption in Japan*3

*2: Reduction in terms of per unit production based on the assumption of 2007 business domains

*3: As of December 2016

We see the CDP Water A List for 2017 as an appraisal of our efforts toward reducing environmental impact serving to promote the effective utilization of water resources. Such initiatives include the cascading (downcycling)* of water at plants for the purpose of reducing amounts of water used, as well as our initiatives toward preserving and regenerating nature, such as Water Resource Cultivation scientifically-based activities conducted in cooperation with specialized institutions such as the Suntory Institute for Water Science, local universities and so on.

*Cascading (downcycling) is a technique that serves to categorize water used in the manufacturing process into grades or washing levels (such as water used for cooling and water used for washing). Cascading entails the stratified re-usage of water from applications requiring higher grades of water within applications requiring lower grades.

At Suntory Beverage & Food Limited, we have been undertaking various activities relating to water under Suntory’s corporate tagline of “Follow Your Nature.” Such activities include Suntory Mizuiku -water education- program (an environmental education program for the next generation) in addition to initiatives geared toward preserving and regenerating nature and reducing environmental impact.
In January of 2017, we formulated the Suntory Group’s Sustainable Water Philosophy based on the increasingly global nature of our corporate activities. This serves as the basic principles for all water-related activities we conduct. We will continue sharing our group philosophies with all members of our group, which means more than 300 companies in Japan and abroad. We’ll also be undertaking activities that are tailored to each individual regional environment so as to contribute to the conservation of water, the most precious resource we have when it comes to our business.
