Blown Glass: Enchanting Forms, Miraculous Skills

Glassblowing is the technique of creating vessels by blowing into glass so hot it has melted, making it puff out, like a balloon. The glass blower does not touch the material directly but acts swiftly, while judging the temperature and state of the glass, to create works, using a technique that is unique to glass, making use of the material qualities of glass.
The origins of blown glass go back to about the first century BCE. Its genesis not only radically changed how glass vessels were made and distributed but also enabled forms possible only in glass to flourish. This exhibition focuses on the techniques that the makers of blown glass employ to create works unique to glass, while presenting blown glass works ancient and modern, from East and West.
The exhibition also introduces the results of collaborative research between contemporary glass artists and researchers in exploring the creative techniques of the unknown blown glass craftsmen of the past. We hope you will savor the works from their makers’ perspectives while rediscovering the fascination of blown glass.
