Kusumi Morikage, an artist active in the early Edo period, studied with Kano Tan’yu and was regarded as the most outstanding of his“big four” students. After moving away from the Kano School, he was invited late in life by the Maeda clan, rulers of the Kaga domain, to live and work in Kanazawa. In creating a host of masterpieces there, he also established his own style, in which he depicted peasants’ lives and customs in a richly lyrical manner. Despite his great talent as an artist and his long and active career, little is known about his life. This exhibition explores Morikage’s style and the mysteries of his life through his work.
