Buddhist angels that fly and dance in the sky are known as "hiten," and, from India to Japan, their elegant and magnificent forms have delighted people for centuries. In this exhibition, we examine the forms of hiten as they have been manifested in sculpture, painting and craft across wide geographical and historical ranges. The exhibition features a special display of sculptures depicting Bodhisattva Riding Clouds from the Phoenix Hall of the Byodoin Temple, ahead of the hall's unveiling after extensive renovations. Also on display is Byodoin's sculpture of hiten attached to the halo of Amidanyorai - the first time it has ever been shown outside of the temple grounds. The Bodhisattva, Amidanyorai and the Phoenix Hall itself are all designated National Treasures. This will be an extremely rare opportunity to see these famous pieces close-up.
