The attraction of glass lies in its luster and its clarity. Yet glass was not always clear; it only became so from around the 8th century BCE. As the contents could thus been seen and enjoyed, glass was soon put to use around the world in the making of various drinking vessels. It thus became associated with alcoholic beverages such as wine and beer. You could say that the history of glass as a material for making utensils has in fact been the history of the drinking glass.
In this exhibition, we introduce glass vessels dating from ancient times to the present, while focusing in particular on artworks depicting scenes with drinking glasses. We invite visitors to enjoy the various aspects of glasses as they appear in different scenes in life: "Dedicate," "Discuss," "Vow," "Encourage," and "Celebrate, gather, serve and enjoy."
