February 6 to March 31 2013
*There will be an exhibition change during the course of exhibition
In this exhibition we explore through paintings and other artworks the tradition of kabuki, which blossomed during the Edo period and continues to thrill the public today. The exhibition traces the development of the kabuki theatrical space by showing paintings depicting the founder of kabuki, Izumo no Okuni, and theaters at Shijo Kawaramachi in Kyoto; Hishikawa-style ukiyo-e paintings of the Nakamuraza theater in Edo; and ukiyo-e depicting theater interiors with Western perspective techniques. The show also looks at the popular actors’ portrait paintings, spectators who supported their favorite actors, and the fashion of the Edo people, how it was influenced by kabuki.
