National Treasure, Choju-Jinbutsu-Giga Emaki -A Special Exhibition Celebrating the New Home of the Suntory Museum of Art

The national treasure, "Choju-Giga (Frolicking Animals and People)", known for its lively and humorous depiction of animals, is not only a very popular article for all ages, but also one of Japan's most significant and widely featured traditional piece of art. This makes the very first exhibition to be solely dedicated to the "Choju-Giga" scrolls.
Housed in the Kozanji Monastery in Togano'o, Kyoto, this article consists of four scrolls, Ko, Otsu, Hei, and Cho. It has been found, however, that the set wasn't created this way, but came together through many phases and transformations. The mystery of its true picture has yet to be revealed. This exhibition will present the "Choju-Giga" scrolls along with all existing fragments and replicas to examine the entirety of the "Choju-Giga" available today in a full-fledged manner.
The elements which characterize "Choju-Giga", such as simple line drawing, humor, and personification of animals, are also recognizable characteristics in a wide range of Japanese design culture and history. This event offers you an ideal opportunity to explore the uniqueness and extensiveness of "Choju-Giga" along with closely related and representative articles through its genealogy.
