Masato Suzuki and Bach Collegium Japan
perform Handel’s Messiah on Christmas Eve
Suntory Hall is pleased to present George Frideric Handel’s seasonal masterpiece, Messiah, on December 24, 2024, performed by the internationally renowned baroque ensemble and choir Bach Collegium Japan (BCJ), who gave a successful European tour this summer including the BBC Proms. BCJ’s Messiah at Christmas, initiated in 2001, has become a long-standing event at Suntory Hall. The delightful vocal solos, splendid choruses, and colourful instrumental writing make this oratorio the highlight of the Christmas season. This year, it will be directed by BCJ principal conductor Masato Suzuki, who delivered a brilliant performance last year, replacing Masaaki Suzuki at short notice.
This year’s Messiah brings together four distinguished soloists from U.K. and Japan who are all regular collaborators of Bach Collegium Japan. Acclaimed British soprano Rachel Nicholls has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with the BCJ, especially in operatic projects including Handel’s Rinaldo. The alto will be sung by rising British countertenor Alexander Chance, who was recently nominated in the Opus Klassik Young Talent of the Year for his debut album. Japanese lyric tenor Makoto Sakurada is featured in many of BCJ’s recordings, and baritone Toru Kaku has appeared as soloist in BCJ’s performance of Bach’s Passions and Mendelssohn’s Elijah.
As last year, BCJ’s performance of Messiah at Suntory Hall will be streamed on the Digital Suntory Hall platform (Paid Live Stream and On Demand), available to an international audience.
