Masaaki Suzuki and Bach Collegium Japan
perform Handel’s Messiah on Christmas Eve

Suntory Hall is pleased to present George Frideric Handel’s seasonal masterpiece, Messiah, on December 24, 2023, performed by the internationally renowned baroque ensemble and choir Bach Collegium Japan (BCJ), directed by Masaaki Suzuki. Their Messiah at Christmas has become a popular annual event at Suntory Hall. The delightful vocal solos, splendid choruses, and colourful instrumental writing make this oratorio the highlight of the Christmas season.
This year’s performance features a fine lineup of international soloists from three continents. Japanese Soprano Eri Sawae, a specialist in English song repertoire, steps out of the BCJ chorus, and the alto solo is sung by Europe-based South African countertenor Clint van der Linde who has enjoyed a long relationship with the BCJ, including a memorable performance of Handel’s Rinaldo at the Edinburgh Festival. South Korean Seil Kim has a reputation as a Baroque and lyric tenor, and has appeared as the soloist in Messiah performances of the National Chorus of Korea every year. American bass-baritone Paul Max Tipton makes a welcome return after his impressive solo in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the BCJ in 2022.
As last year, BCJ’s performance of Messiah at Suntory Hall will be streamed on the Digital Suntory Hall platform (Paid Live Stream and On Demand), available to an international audience.
