Mitsuko Uchida Returns to Suntory Hall
to perform Beethoven’s epic Diabelli Variations
October 19 and 25, 2021

Suntory Hall is pleased to present two solo recitals by the celebrated pianist Mitsuko Uchida on October 19 and 25, 2021 in the Main Hall.
Recognised as one of the foremost pianists of our time, Uchida made her first appearance at Suntory Hall back in 1986, performing Mozart’s complete piano concertos during the hall’s opening season. Ever since, she has made Suntory Hall her home venue in Japan, and she is the only hall’s Associate Artist. Her last appeared at the hall three years ago.
In November 2020, Uchida was scheduled to visit Japan with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, but the tour had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. At the time, she promised to return to Japan at the earliest opportunity to perform live for the Japanese audience, and the hall is immensely happy to welcome her back on stage a year on.
A pianist who is renowned for her exquisite tone, outstanding lyricism, and deep intellect, Uchida is peerless in her interpretations of Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. As the centerpiece of the two programmes, she has chosen Beethoven’s epic 33 Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli, which she considers a “special piece because of its depth and musical intensity”. The work is preceded by Mozart’s piano sonata in F major (October 19), and excerpts from Schubert’s Four Impromptus, D. 935 (October 25).

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Sonata in F Major, K. 533 / K. 494
