Suntory Hall has been hosting Wiener Philharmoniker Week in Japan since 1999, giving the Japanese audiences a regular opportunity to enjoy this renowned orchestra, and this year is its twenty-second edition. At the helm will be Christian Thielemann, regarded as one of the most prestigious heirs to the German conducting tradition. Furthermore, based on the common wish of the Wiener Philharmoniker and Suntory Hall for the “fruitful development of music culture,” a free open rehearsal, open masterclass, and a school programme will be held.

Mitsuko Uchida Piano Recital 2025

One of the most revered artists of our time, Mitsuko Uchida is widely praised for her intelligent and thoughtful interpretations. She has made Suntory Hall her home venue in Japan, and she is the hall’s Associate Artist. On this occasion, Uchida explores the spiritual world of Beethoven's last three piano sonatas.

Chamber Music Garden 2025

Suntory Hall Chamber Music Garden, founded in 2011 at the suggestion of the hall’s president and cellist Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, is an annual celebration of chamber music in all shapes and sizes. This year, 19 concerts will take place over 16 days in the Blue Rose (Small Hall). The complete Beethoven string quartet cycle, an annual highlight of the festival, will be performed by the Schumann Quartett from Germany, and the Israeli Chamber Project, made up from musicians based in New York and Israel, makes a first appearance in Japan. The fantastic lineup also includes the Aoi Trio and Quartet Integra, both former fellows of the Suntory Hall Chamber Music Academy who have built a successful international career.

Summer Festival 2025

Theme Composer / Yasushi Akutagawa Suntory Award for Music Composition

Presented by Suntory Hall since 1987, this annual celebration of contemporary music is seen as a major event in Tokyo’s summer cultural calendar.
This year’s Theme Composer is Paris-based Greek composer, Georges Aperghis. Winner of the prestigious Siemens Prize 2021, he works primarily in the field of experimental music theatre. Several of his compositions will be featured, including a new commissioned work.
The 35th Competition of Yasushi Akutagawa Suntory Award for Music Composition is an integral part of the Summer Festival. The award is presented to the most notable orchestral work by a Japanese composer premiered in the previous year.

Music Festival
for Children and Young People

May 3-6

Following the success in 2022, Sony Music Foundation and Suntory Hall, SUNTORY FOUNDATION for the ARTS jointly host the second Music Festival for Children and Young People. Over four days, 14 concerts will be held, which are tailored to respective age groups. Pianist Shinya Kiyozuka acts as the official ambassador and main host of the live stream, spreading the festival's charm far and wide.

Suntory Hall launches a new series of lunchtime organ concerts, presented by well-known TV personality Hikaru Ijuin. In the first half, Ijuin explores the hidden charms of the organ in conversation with Japan’s top organists, while the second half features a live performance on the hall’s famed Rieger organ. Opera Academy Concert

Opera Academy was inaugurated in 1993. In 2011, the Academy invited eminent tenor Giuseppe Sabbatini, currently active as a conductor and vocal coach, to join as the Executive Faculty. The July concert will showcase the young singers in classic Italian songs as the result of their two-year study, and the February concert will feature scenes from Italian operas.

The Academy Concert showcases the talents of the fellows of Suntory Hall Chamber Music Academy. The National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA), organised by the Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, makes its debut in Japan. Each summer, talented young players of ages 16 to 19 from across USA gather for a training residency, followed by a national/international tour. In 2025, the orchestra will be conducted by Gianandrea Noseda and violinist Ray Chen joins as soloist.

Commemorative Concert of
the 55th Suntory Music Award

The Suntory Music Award is presented every year to individuals or ensembles for notable contributions to the development of Western-style music in Japan. The recipient of the 55th Award (2023) is the composer Jo Kondo. His music has been praised for “the unique personality which synthesizes Japanese aesthetic sensibility and western harmonic structure”. The concert will feature his major works including the opera Hagoromo (Japanese premiere).

Encounter with Stradivari 2025

Suntory Hall has hosted the “Encounter with Stradivari” concerts on four occasions since 2008. It is a showcase for artists who are loaned Stradivarius instruments from the Japan Music Foundation. This year’s concert features two young artists, violinist Timothy Chui on the Stradivarius “Engleman” (1709) and cellist Michiaki Ueno on the Stradivarius “Feuermann” (1730).

Since 1988, Suntory Hall has celebrated the beginning of another year with the Symphony Orchestra, singers, and dancers of the renowned Volksoper Wien, who entertain us with selections of popular operettas and familiar Viennese waltzes and polkas.
The New Year Concert 2026 will be conducted by Ola Rudner and will feature singers Kristiane Kaiser (soprano) and Miroslav Dvorský (tenor).
