MIDORI

MIDORI had been scheduled for Special Stage 2020 with Beethoven's 250th Birthday Anniversary in October, but the event was postponed due to complications in the arrival to Japan by herself and other performers from abroad. However, it will be held this year as the 40th anniversary of MIDORI's debut. MIDORI's allure as an international artist will be showcased mainly with Beethoven's pieces including sonatas for piano & violin, piano trios, and concertos.

Andris Nelsons conducts
Boston Symphony Orchestra

Andris Nelsons, the 15th musical director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is held in high regard as a key component in creating the best combination of a conductor and orchestra. This prominent international combination will return to Japan for the first time in five years. Plus, one of the most revered artists of our time, pianist Mitsuko Uchida makes an appearance as a soloist in the concerto programme. Various other plans, such as rehearsals available to the public free of charge and youth programmes, are scheduled in addition to the main performance.

Chamber Music Garden 2022 (CMG)

Suntory Hall's annual Chamber Music Garden festival takes place in June in the intimate space of its “Blue Rose” (Small Hall). This year, 22 concerts are held, opening with a concert produced by cellist and President of Suntory Hall Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi. Two years after the cancellation of their performance, the Atrium String Quartet and pianist Yekwon Sunwoo finally make it to Japan. International hornist Radek Baborák additionally shines through his solos, chamber music, and prowess as a conductor.

Chamber Music Garden 2022 (CMG)

Suntory Hall Chamber Music Academy

The Quartet Integra marks its 4th year while members have continued pursuing their studies at the Suntory Hall Chamber Music Academy and has now taken a flawless first place at the Bartók World Competition, held in Budapest last October. The unanimous victory at their first international competition generates anticipation of their further growth and activity. And two concerts by the fellows (academy members) of Suntory Hall Chamber Music Academy who showcase the fruit of their devoted focus on music. The musicians' introductions of the pieces provided before each performance are highly regarded.

The Producer Series
KLANGFORUM WIEN

In this series, each year a different artist/ensemble is invited to curate a series of concerts from his/her/their unique point of view. This year's producer is highly regarded contemporary music ensemble from Europe, the Klangforum Wien. Since its foundation in 1985, the Vienna-based group is known for "exploring new horizons of artistic creativity together with the most important composers of our time".

The Theme Composer series presents a portrait of a leading international composer, and commissions him/her a new orchestral work that is premiered during the festival. This year's theme composer is German composer Isabel Mundry (b.1963). In her compositions, Mundry explores the relationships between time, space, and perception in rich, multi-faceted ways, which are woven into a highly unique sonic language.

The 32nd Competition of Yasushi Akutagawa Suntory Award for Music Composition

The award was founded in 1990 commemorating Yasushi Akutagawa the composer for his significant contribution to the development of Japan's music during the post-war period. This award is given to an up-and-coming Japanese composer whose orchestral composition is selected as the most fresh and promising from among those having premiered in Japan or abroad. The winning composer is commissioned to compose a new orchestral work, which is to be premiered in this programme concert after 2 years.

SUNTORY HALL OPERA ACADEMY

Young singers and pianists who have been under the tutelage of Giuseppe Sabbatini showcase classic Italian songs as well as opera arias as the fruits of their yearlong study. In March, the Academy fellows perform an opera on stage at Blue Rose. The way the stage makes use of the venue's intimate space pleases crowds every time.

Suntory Music Award

The Suntory Music Award is presented each year to individuals or groups for their incredible achievements in developing Western music in Japan. Maestro Ken Takaseki received the 50th award in 2018 for exemplifying the incontrovertible answer to what it is a conductor does. Pianist Hisako Kawamura was awarded the 51st Suntory Music Award in 2019 for her uniquely expressive and passionate musical performances.

Music Festival

ARK Hills Music Week

The opening of ARK Hills Music Week is Suntory Hall ARK Classics, will be led by artistic leaders Nobuyuki Tsujii and Fumiaki Miura. Around 10 incredibly diverse concerts will be performed at the Main Hall and Blue Rose (Small Hall) for a period of five days.

Encounter with Stradivari 2022

The Goldmund Quartet, performing with Stradivarius on loan from Nippon Music Foundation, will give its first concert in Japan. Their instruments “Paganini Quartet” is one of only six Stradivarius string quartets in the world.  Their visit, originally scheduled for 2021, had to be postponed due to the pandemic.
