Hall Opera®
Verdi: La traviata

Hall Opera® was a new way of staging opera devised by Suntory Hall, and it has formed an important part of the hall's history. In October 2021, Hall Opera® will present Verdi's "La traviata", led by Italian conductor Nicola Luisotti, who has given many memorable performances in this series. The handpicked cast includes the internationally acclaimed tenor, Francesco Demuro, as Alfredo. The staging will be directed by Michiko Taguchi, who has had many years of experience in European opera houses. An additional performance will be presented by the talented Japanese cover cast (October 8).

Mitsuko Uchida Piano Recital 2021

Recognised as one of the foremost pianists of our time, Uchida made her first appearance at Suntory Hall back in 1986, performing Mozart’s complete piano concertos during the hall’s opening season. Ever since, she has made Suntory Hall her home venue in Japan, and she is the only hall’s Associate Artist. Her last appeared at the hall three years ago.

Suntory Hall and Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna Philharmonic) open up a rehearsal for free to the public to help people become more easily acquainted with the allure of Wiener Philharmoniker and the acoustics of Suntory Hall. Experience the sense of solidarity between the conductor and Wiener Philharmoniker as they come together as one to develop music.

During Wiener Philharmoniker Week, a diverse line up of programmes is held by Suntory Hall and Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna Philharmonic) as part of an education programme for young people. School programme geared towards junior high and high school students. With the strong wish to pass on the tradition of music to young people, the Wiener Philharmoniker is actively working to nurture young musicians. Students are recruited from the general public to participate in master classes with on-site Japanese speaking interpreter.

Suntory Hall Chamber Music Garden 2021

Chamber Music Garden celebrates its 10th anniversary with a specially expanded programme, 22 days and 28 performances.
For the annual Beethoven String Quartet cycle, CMG welcomes the distinguished Jerusalem Quartet, which made its debut 25 years ago. Küchl Quartett and Hedenborg Trio, regulars to Suntory Hall, will bring a flavour of Vienna to the garden. Rising talents – the Schumann Quartett, Novus String Quartet, and Aoi Trio – will appear in the "Brilliant Ensembles" series. In the "Fortepiano Kaleidoscope" concerts, people can enjoy the kaleidoscopic sonorities of four historical fortepianos in ensemble with string instruments and voice. Meanwhile, pianist Yu Kosuge produces two evenings of chamber music of Toru Takemitsu and his predecessors. Other highlights include the Brahms cello sonatas performed by the regular duo of Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi (cello) and Michie Koyama (piano) in the Opening Concert, performances by Suntory Hall's Chamber Music Academy fellows, the informal lunchtime concerts, and the all-star final concert.
There will be a total of 28 concerts, and 7 of them will be live-streamed (paid).

This is a week-long contemporary music festival with a long history since the opening of Suntory Hall.
The Ensemble Intercontemporain (EIC), boasting quality execution and the long history in the world of contemporary music, has been invited from Paris as the producer of this year's programme. The group introduces the history and future of contemporary music, drawing from their own grand contemporary music repertoire. They will showcase the cutting edge in the international contemporary scene.

The Music Director of Ensemble Intercontemporain, Matthias Pintscher, also joins the festival as the theme composer.
These two of the world's leading figures in the contemporary music world offer a musical tour de force.
A call for scores-style composition workshop led by Pintscher is available.

The 31st Competition of Yasushi Akutagawa Suntory Award for Music Composition

The Award was founded in 1990 commemorating Yasushi Akutagawa the composer for his significant contribution to the development of Japan's music during the postwar period. This award is given to an up-and-coming Japanese composer whose orchestral composition is selected as the most fresh and promising from among those premiering in Japan or abroad. The winning composer is commissioned to compose a new orchestral work, which is to be premiered at this programme concert after 2 years.

Suntory Hall ARK Classics

Based on the concept of "Encounters with and through music," the neighbouring areas of Suntory Hall centred on ARK Hills will be brimming with music during ARK Hills Music Week. The finale, Suntory Hall ARK Classics, will be led by artistic leaders Nobuyuki Tsujii and Fumiaki Miura. Diverse concerts will be performed at the Main Hall and Blue Rose (Small Hall) for a period of four days.

ENCOUNTER with STRADIVARI 2021
