When you hear the word "marvel" used about a work of art, the first thing that comes to mind is probably a magnificent work, a paragon, perhaps something designated a National Treasure, its glorious artistic value recognized by all. But a marvel can also be something utterly puzzling, a work little noticed and rarely exhibited. Another world unfolds as, with a shift in perspective, something seen as a puzzle at best reveals its powerfully compelling possibilities.Paragon or puzzle? There's no set standard for telling them apart. It's up to you to decide.
The fundamental concept inspiring the Suntory Museum of Art collection is "Art in Life." This exhibition presents, as a body, marvels from that collection, introducing their diverse charisma from many perspectives. When you learn about tales associated with a work or about an unexpected aspect of it, a paradox may turn into a paragon, or vice versa. Such is the behavior of marvels. It's up to you to decide whether the work before you is a paragon or a puzzle, a masterpiece or a muddle. Go for it—search for your very own paragons or puzzles!
