Suntory Mizuiku Outdoor School of Forest and Water
－Conveying the importance of water and the forests that produce it

Beginning in 2004 in Aso (Kumamoto Prefecture), and expanding to Hakushu (Yamanashi Prefecture) and Okudaisen (Tottori Prefecture), 2014 marked the tenth anniversary since launching the activity. Targeting third to sixth grade elementary school students and their parents, about 19,800 have participated so far (as of 2015). The planning and management of the program is done in cooperation with expert instructors who are actively involved in local environmental education.

The children who participated have submitted a great many comments, such as, "I learned how the water that falls on the mountain becomes pure in 20 years," "I learned that there is a deep connection between spring water and the water as well as the forests," "It was like a forest expedition where I learned a lot about how the soft soil and the forest work, which was really interesting."

The parents who participated submitted comments as well, such as, "I was able to learn about my connection with nature through an experience with a real forest, which I don't often have the chance to do in my daily life," "It was a good program where children and parents could experience nature together," "It was a very valuable experience where I could learn firsthand about the connection between water and the forest as well as the magnificence of nature."

Suntory will continue programs that convey the greatness of "water" and "the forests that produce it" to the next generation.
