Suntory's Vision for Developing 20 Natural Water Sanctuaries Throughout Japan

To maintain the sustainability of water resources, Suntory has been advancing the conservation and renewal of forests in the groundwater areas around our production facilities.

Forest preservation takes a very long time. That’s why a “vision” of how the forest should look decades or even a century from now is so important.

1. Agreements that last 30 years or longer
Forest preservation to “protect the future of water and life” takes more than just one or two years to produce results. The agreements we forge with local landowners are normally 30 years or longer.
2. Predicting a forest's future by understanding its past and present
To cultivate a vibrant forest requires a solid understanding of the forest's current condition.
The future of the forest can only be predicted with an understanding of its climate, topography and geology, as well as of the kinds of flora and fauna that inhabit it.
3. Checking for problems in the predicted future of a forest
When the predicted future of a forest indicates that it may lose the ability to replenish groundwater and sustain diverse life,
something must be done to help.
4. Development plans that are specific to each forest and even smaller areas
Even within a single “Natural Water Sanctuary,” the forest is nowhere the same. Smaller areas require plans developed specifically for them.
5. A vision of “Natural Water Sanctuaries” to serve forest preservation in Japan
The effort to apply the knowledge and research of various disciplines to the building of forests capable of replenishing their groundwater and sustaining biodiversity has only just begun.

We will continue to conduct research and undertake projects that ensure the abundance of Japan’s water and forests in the future.
