Suntory Museum of Art is pleased to present this exhibition, based on the theme of “Art in Life,” as a representation of our collecting and exhibiting activities. This is an appreciation of the experience offered not only by painted and sculpted works of art but also by implements and furnishings used in everyday life. This appreciation is one of the distinctive features of the Japanese sense of beauty, and a great number of objects have been created based on it. Since the opening of Suntory Museum of Art in 1961, we have been introducing these kinds of works in special exhibitions and through displays of the collection.
This is the first exhibition following the museum’s recent renovation and for it we have returned to the concept originally underpinning our mission. Inviting you to view a carefully selected collection of pieces that adorn everyday life, we move from objects, pieces used on festive, ceremonial occasions, kimonos, gorgeous makeup, and celebratory paraphernalia used in drinking banquets, to works with exotic designs that reflect the tastes of other cultures. As a further endeavor, with the assistance of present-day artists who have a profound knowledge of historical art— Yamaguchi Akira, Wakamiya Takashi of the Hikoju Makie lacquer group, Yamamoto Taro, and Noguchi Tetsuya—we present a show that combines contemporary art with the museum collection.
