The figures of the dancers, holding a fan in one hand, are executed on a gold ground. Today, the paintings are framed, but there are many similar examples painted on folding screens, so it is likely that these ones were also originally painted on screens. The arrangement of different poses creates a rhythmical, almost animated, appearance. The attractive garments are vividly colored with detailed depictions of auspicious motifs featuring phoenixes, dragonflies, the bridges of the koto, cranes, dragons, and peacocks.
