On an utterly undecorated white surface, two sprays of pomegranates, one on each side, generously make use of the white space. They are depicted in delicate detail, the branches with their modulating lines in underglaze blue, the leaves in underglaze blue and overglaze green and yellow. The pomegranates themselves are expressed with subtle color variations in alternating points and lines; the effect is extremely realistic. The pomegranate, a symbol of rich harvests, was a favorite motif in Nabeshima ware. In addition to being depicted in many sketches, pomegranates were used in underglaze blue works that were almost identical in design to this dish.
