Kakiemon-style porcelains, produced in Arita in the 1670s to 1690s, were exported by the Dutch East India Company to Europe, where they were popular among the elites. This slab-built hexagonal jar with lid is colorfully decorated in bird-and-flower motifs. It is an example of the largest slab-built jars, which had a total height in the thirty centimeter range. Similar pieces have been confirmed in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Dresden State Art Collections) and other collections. Since copies were produced at Meissen, it is likely that this jar was a particularly popular example of the Kakiemon style.
