This jar has swelling shoulders and tapers gently towards the bottom. Apart from the foot, which is round, the jar has been faceted to produce an octagonal shape. The large panels on the body have alternating plum tree and peach tree designs. Between them are palmettes with four-petal flower motifs on a hexagonal ground. Arabesques, dragon and phoenix roundels, and other motifs decorate the lid, shoulders, neck, and bottom of the body. These motifs, which show the strong influence of Chinese art, are painted in fine black lines and in red, yellow, green, purple, and gold, with no use of underglaze blue. An early example of a large kinrande (overglaze enamel with gold) export-ware jar, this work, with overglaze enamels of the finest quality, is a masterpiece.
