The classic Nabeshima dish is round, with a tall foot. This example, however, is octagonal and was mould-formed to achieve its exquisite shape. The center has the character kotobuki (longevity/congratulations) in reserve against the deep cobalt blue ground. Around it are eight jewels. Treasure motifs (conch shell, shō or bamboo wind instrument, wooden clappers, cymbals, magic hammer, hat of invisibility, cloak of invisibility, rhinoceros horn cup; treasure scroll, book, treasure sword, fan, and brush) are scattered around them. The inside of the bowl is thus filled with auspicious motifs. The exterior has peony motifs on each of the eight side. The tall, round foot has a precise combed design. This dish is famed as a superb example of Iro-Nabeshima (colored Nabeshima) shichisun-zara (dish about 20 centimeters in diameter).
