Higashi kogin embroidery kimono

This Azuma kogin kimono has one continuous pattern embroidered on the front and back. It has hemp fabric sleeves and skirt and a kasuri (ikat) removable eri collar. The kogin embroidery in cotton thread reinforces the fabric and makes it warmer. It is also highly decorative. Usually an odd number of warp threads are picked up from the hemp fabric and slipped to embroider them, one by one, in the next row. There are about forty basic Azuma kogin patterns, with vertical lozenge motifs predominant. They are combined to compose designs. The motifs are usually taken from aspects of the natural setting. In this kimono, the basic motif, the hanako, is a stylized floral motif.
