From the 1880s on, Gallé often inscribed literary quotations in his works, quotations associated with the work's theme or its inspiration. They evoke connections that are deeply moving to the person viewing his world of decoration and form. Those works, which he termed "glass that speaks," added a new depth to Gallé's richly lyrical world view. This masterpiece, a wine bottle with a quotation praising intoxication inscribed in it, integrates the functional, decorative, and literary. This bottle is entirely integrated with the grape motif. Gallé called vessels with verses frompoems inscribed on them “verrerie parlante” (speaking glass). This bottle, with a quotation from Le Poison, a poem by Charles Baudelaire, inscribed on its back, praises the intoxication wine can produce. (『没後120年 エミール・ガレ:憧憬のパリ』サントリー美術館、2024年)
