A curved octagonal incense box with a fitted lid and beveled bottom. A decorative tin band encircles the rims of the lid and the box. The gold and copper fittings on the body are worked in the shape of bamboo leaf cords. The surface is hirameji (sprinkled with irregular gold or silver flakes). The inside of the lid and the interior of the box are also done in shallow hirameji. Bamboo on a sandbar is depicted in burnished togidashi maki-e on the lid and sides. The leaves and nodes of the bamboo are rendered using the kakiwari technique, reserving black lines against the maki-e areas. The inside of the lid and the interior of the box also feature a broken twig pattern of pine and bamboo in burnished togidashi maki-e. There is an air of antiquity in the sober appearance and the luxuriously curved shape.
