This soup server bears the coat of arms of the city of Nancy. Gallé often used motifs that symbolize Nancy or the Lorraine region. The historical context behind that practice is France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian war, which meant that part of Alsace-Lorraine, his home, was ceded to the Germans. Gallé sustained, throughout his life, his love for the region where he was born and raised.(『没後120年 エミール・ガレ:憧憬のパリ』サントリー美術館、2024年)
