Forum Report

On May 24, 2024, the Reexamining Japan in Global Context forum gathered in Tokyo for a fascinating discussion comparing migration governance and demographic trends in North America, Europe and Japan.

Dr. Anna Triandafyllidou gave the first presentation. Dr. Triandafyllidou is a globally recognized sociologist and migration policy expert. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on the governance of migration and asylum; the management of cultural diversity, nationalism, and identity issues, and contemporary challenges of migration and integration across different world regions. Dr. Triandafyllidou touched on all these themes in her presentation, using Canada, Spain and the United Kingdom as case studies.

Dr. Yu Korekawa gave the second presentation. Dr. Korekawa is the Director of International Research and Cooperation at Japan's National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, and a specialist in migration. Dr. Korekawa offered a rich portrait of Japan's place in the international and regional labour market, Japan's distinct policy approaches, and what recent trends can tell us about the country's demographic future.
