Energizing Japan with Music! “9th Vienna Philharmonic & Suntory Music Aid Award” Recipients Confirmed

The Suntory Foundation for the Arts (Director Generals: Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, Shingo Torii) has decided to present the “9th Vienna Philharmonic & Suntory Music Aid Award,” a promotion service of the Vienna Philharmonic & Suntory Music Aid Fund, to the following 12 recipients.

To continue efforts to energize disaster-stricken areas and the nation through the revitalization of Japanese music culture, the Music Aid Award invites applications from groups and individuals throughout Japan conducting activities that meet the objectives of the Fund. The Award was established in 2012 and will continue for ten years through 2021. A grant will be provided to the award recipients.


Name: The 9th Vienna Philharmonic & Suntory Music Aid Award

Eligible Activities: Activities such as musical performances and efforts to promote music that are mainly focused on classical music and will be held in Japan between November 1, 2020 and October 31, 2021, with the aim of energizing disaster-stricken areas and the nation

Selection Process: Award recipients were selected through deliberation by the selection committee on September 9, 2020 and officially confirmed by the Foundation’s board of directors on October 13, 2020.

Grant Total: 5.3 million yen

About the Vienna Philharmonic & Suntory Music Aid Fund
After the Great East Japan Earthquake which struck Japan on March 11, 2011, the Vienna Philharmonic pledged a donation of one hundred million yen via Suntory Hall "in hopes of conveying our condolences to our dearest friends in Japan who have been victimized by the earthquake damage." Having built up a bond of trust as a partner with the Vienna Philharmonic through many years of Japan tours by the orchestra, the Suntory Group, too, established a matching fund in April 2012 to indicate its support.
To continuously offer support activities to invigorate not only the affected areas but also all of Japan through music, the fund conducts a grant project under which it awards grants to “Vienna Philharmonic & Suntory Music Aid Award” recipients and a performance project through which it sponsors “Concert for Children” performances.
