Suntory Holdings Limited and Kyoei Sangyo Co., Ltd. have received an Encouragement Award and Collaboration Award at the 2019 Awards for Resources Recirculation Technologies and Systems, sponsored by the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry. The awards ceremony will be held on Friday, October 18.
The Resources Recirculation Technologies and Systems Awards are presented by the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry, with the backing of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, to businesses with excellent technologies that contribute to waste reduction, reuse and recycling.
The “F to P Direct Recycling Technique” which received the award has developed and streamlined the bottle-to-bottle recycling method, which makes recycled PET bottles out of PET bottles. A technology in which “flake” created by pulverizing and washing recovered PET bottles is treated at high temperature and low pressure for a fixed period and that, after being melted and filtered, enables the preform*1 to be manufactured directly. In comparison to the previous setup, which required a large number of processes leading up to the manufacture of the preform, such as crystallization and drying, it is estimated that reductions*2 in CO2 emissions of approximately 25% will be possible. In comparison to the case of producing new preforms using petroleum-derived raw materials, CO2 can be reduced by 60% or more.
*1 A PET bottle template shaped like a test tube and made from PET resin. The PET bottle is formed by heating this and injecting air under high pressure.
*2 Per kg of PET bottle preform
The Suntory Group and Kyoei Sangyo Co., Ltd., intend to continue promoting the use of the “F to P Direct Recycling Technique” for bottle-to-bottle PET bottle recycling.
