SPIRITS OF SUNGOLIATH #932 SEAN MCMAHON

SEAN MCMAHON "What I Love About Rugby"

Sean McMahon marked his long-anticipated comeback during a practice match. We had a conversation with this elite rugby player regarding his current mindset. (Interview date: Mid-November 2024)

◆In Peak Condition

--- It's been three years since our last discussion. Now that you've returned, how do you feel?

I believe I'm in the best shape of my career right now. Physically and mentally, I feel at my best. Although I faced a series of injuries over the past three years, I'm currently in optimal condition.

--- When you say you're in your best shape, does that mean rehabilitation has made you stronger?

I think I've indeed grown stronger through rehab, but the last three years have been quite a challenging journey. It was a tough time both mentally and physically, requiring me to become more resilient to overcome it. Having successfully navigated that, I feel this is the best state I've ever been in throughout my 14-year professional journey.

--- That sounds exciting! You chose to stay in Japan for treatment rather than going to Australia. What was behind that decision?

I was injured at the beginning of the season. After having surgery in Australia, I couldn't travel for a month, so I stayed there. However, Suntory has exceptional staff and trainers, so I was eager to return as soon as possible. Since everyone was working hard, I wanted to contribute as much as I could while focusing on my rehabilitation. Being at Suntory was advantageous, so I joined them quickly and put in my best effort.

◆Cherishing Life

--- It seems like it took longer than expected. What contributed to your endurance during that lengthy period?

First and foremost, I'm grateful to my family and children. Their support helped me through tough times. I had to endure physically, but the mental aspect was paramount. The Suntory staff provided incredible support, and I believe I wouldn't have made it through without them. Their consistent backing helped me overcome challenges, for which I am truly thankful.

--- Your children must have matured significantly over the past three years.

Indeed, my oldest is now in the first grade, and my youngest just started kindergarten. They're beginning to grasp more, and we're enjoying our time together.

--- Now that you're fully recovered, you can play more with your kids physically, which must be nice?

Absolutely! When you injure your shoulder or knee, you can't do anything for at least two months, which was tough on my wife and kids. My wife managed everything remarkably well during that time, making it easier for us. She truly is an extraordinary person.

◆ Intensity, Challenge, and Connection

--- After your recovery and return to the rugby field, what aspects brought you joy?

Finally being back on the field last weekend was exhilarating. The preparation felt more intense than anything I've experienced in my career. I was quite anxious about whether I was ready and if I could actually play rugby, but once the match began and I touched the ball, all the reasons why I love rugby and why I persevered flooded back, which was fantastic. I only played for 20 minutes, but it was quite challenging for my lungs. Despite that, recalling those feelings was a remarkable experience.

--- What specifically reminded you of "why you love rugby"?

I play rugby for my family, but I also enjoy the intensity and competition. I love being able to play alongside my teammates and facing challenges together, which creates a wonderful sense of unity.

When in rehab, although you are with your teammates to a certain extent. Ultimately, I train on my own time, and my focus was different from everyone else. Finally being able to step onto the field and play rugby with everyone, feeling that connection, is truly special.

--- The team has changed significantly since you first joined Sungoliath. Does it feel refreshing to you?

Having been in Japan for seven years, I've seen new players join and some leave. It feels like a new team, and it's amusing to see someone I once played with become the head coach (laughs). We've shared a lot of time in the field, locker room, and meetings, so now I need to refine my connections with the new players, which adds to the freshness.

--- You have a great expression during this interview.

I'm thrilled to talk about my return.

◆Competing in Matches

--- What are your goals for this season?

First and foremost, my goal is to compete in the League One matches. Within that, I aim to contribute as much as possible to achieving victory. For that, it's essential to prepare thoroughly for each game and be physically fit. I'm recognized as an intense player, so I must ensure I'm ready to give 100%. Additionally, I aim to perform well on the field for all my supporters.

--- Is there a chance for you to represent the Japanese national team?

Regrettably, since I've been involved with the Australian national team, I can't play for Japan. If I had originally been Japanese and then played for Australia, I could have had a chance to represent Japan after a few years, but as an Australian, that option isn't available to me.

--- What if you were to change your nationality to Japanese?

Haha (laughs). I don't have enough days in Japan to make that happen.
