Suntory Hall International Program for Music Composition No.40, Artistic Director : Toshio Hosokawa
Suntory Hall has commissioned orchestral works to forefront composers every year and has presented these world-premieres. It started on the proposal and supervision by late Toru Takemitsu in 1986 when this hall opened. The supervisor was taken over by Joji Yuasa in 1999, then succeed by Toshio Hosokawa in 2012.

“AKUTAGAWA Award for Music Composition” was established in 1990 by Suntory Music Foundation (switched to Suntory Foundation for Arts in 2009) to commemorate the achievement of the composer Yasushi Akutagawa (1925 – 1989). This award is to honor the piece composed by the Japanese and premiered either at home or abroad that has the most freshness and the potential for the bright future ahead. The nominated works are performed on stage and the judging process is open to public; this approach is first to be done in Japan. The winner receives not only the prize but also a commission for the new work.
Cooperated with The Japan Federation of Composers, Japanese Society for Rights of Authers, Composers and Publishers and Japan Society for Contemporary Music.
